Select a fence, enter its length in metres and choose an energiser if required. The result includes the listed fence rate and energiser unit price only.

Your estimate

Enter your details and select “Calculate estimate”.

This is a budget estimate, not a quotation. Energiser fitting, accessories, concrete, wall steps and other site work are excluded unless confirmed in a quote. Energiser suitability must be checked by the installer.

The energiser powers the fence. Compare the units below, then ask us to confirm the model for your proposed system. These unit prices exclude fitting, earthing, lightning protection and a siren.

Photos are retained from the existing catalogue. Confirm the exact model and current specification before ordering. Joule figures alone do not determine suitability.

Length, height, corners, steps and gate crossings affect the required materials and installation time.

Equipment and security needs

The selected energiser, zones and accessories change the total. Ask whether a longer project qualifies for a lower rate per metre.

Electric fence compliance

Compliance covers the complete installation, including equipment, earthing, layout and warning signs. Ask the registered installer to explain the checks and documentation for your property.

The linked Stafix guide discusses the 2011 regulations and later standards. It is a historical reference, revised in July 2017; current requirements should be confirmed for the installation.

The older page refers to warning signs at 10-metre intervals in built-up areas, gateways and changes of direction. Have the installer confirm the applicable spacing for your site.

Clear answers

Electric fence cost questions

How much does an electric fence cost to install?

Listed rates start at R105/m for 6-line wall-top fencing and R205/m for an 18-line freestanding fence. These include standard fence materials and labour, with the energiser priced separately.

How much should I budget for an energiser?

Listed unit prices range from R2,350 to R5,865. A broader equipment budget of R3,000–R7,500 may apply depending on model and accessories. Confirm the full installed package rather than comparing unit prices alone.

Are lower rates available for longer fences?

Ask for a project quote. Longer installations may qualify for a lower rate. Earlier guide figures of R95/m for 6-line wall-top and R195/m for 18-line fencing are not used as the standard rates in this table.

How do I compare electric fence quotes?

Compare the same fence length, line count and materials. Check the energiser, accessories, earthing, site work, certificate and warranty included in each quote.

Does an electric fence work during a power cut?

A compatible energiser with a charged backup battery can continue working during a power cut. Runtime depends on the model, battery condition and operating mode. The earlier 4–8-hour guide is not a guaranteed runtime. Ask about a suitable solar option for longer outages.

Does an electric fence use much electricity?

Check the chosen energiser’s rated power consumption. It supplies controlled pulses to the fence; it does not connect fence wires directly to household mains power. The earlier comparison with a 60W bulb and a pulse voltage around 9,000V should not be treated as specifications for every model.

Is electric fencing effective?

It can add a deterrent and support perimeter monitoring. It is also used for suitable animal-control applications. Its performance depends on design, maintenance and the selected equipment.

For property security, consider it alongside an alarm system and CCTV .

Can you install a kit I have already bought?

Yes, enquire about installation of your own kit. Send its model details and contents so we can assess compatibility and identify any additional equipment needed.

What should I send for a quote?

Send your location, approximate fence length, preferred type and photos. Include gates, corners, wall steps and any existing equipment in the photos.
