First compare the fence rate. Then add the equipment and site work.
Start with the fence type

Electric fence installation prices per metre

A running metre measures the length of the fence route. Therefore, a 100-metre boundary uses 100 running metres, regardless of how many wire lines the selected package has.

Standard pricing is based on 3-metre pole spacing. Wall steps, difficult access and changes to the layout may add to the cost. Freestanding rates also exclude concrete for corner posts.

Before booking, confirm the current price, VAT, travel and all inclusions in your written quote.

What does the price per metre include?

Standard fence materials and labour

  • Poles or wall brackets
  • Fence wires
  • Strainers and standard installation hardware
  • Standard installation labour

Our equipment is sourced through suppliers such as Stafix and Nemtek.

Items to confirm separately

  • Energiser supply and fitting
  • Earthing and lightning protection
  • Gate contacts, sirens and monitoring lights
  • Solar equipment and enclosures
  • Concrete for freestanding corner posts
  • Additional work required by the site

As a result, two quotes with the same metre rate may have different final totals.

What affects electric fence installation cost?

Ground and access

Rocky ground can require extra equipment. Similarly, difficult access or walls above 2.4 metres can increase labour costs.

Height and layout

The line count, corners, wall steps and gates affect the materials needed. Therefore, photos help us prepare a clearer quote.

Length and equipment

Longer projects may qualify for a lower rate per metre. However, the energiser and accessories must still suit the complete installation.

Add the equipment cost

Electric fence energiser prices

The energiser supplies controlled pulses to the fence. Although price matters, the model must also suit the fence layout and intended use.

The following unit prices exclude installation, earthing, lightning protection and sirens. Listed joule figures should be checked against the selected model’s specification.

Helpful answers

Electric fence cost per metre questions

How much does electric fencing cost per metre?

The listed wall-top rates are R105–R165 per metre. Freestanding options are R205–R275 per metre, while the 30-line piggyback option is R350 per metre. The energiser is separate.

Does the metre rate include the energiser?

No. These metre rates cover standard fence materials and installation. Therefore, add the selected energiser and separately quoted accessories when planning the total.

How much does an energiser cost?

Listed units range from R2,350 to R5,865. A broader package budget of R3,000–R7,500 may apply, depending on the model and accessories. Ask for an itemised installed quote.

Why do some older prices show lower rates?

Earlier FAQ figures include R85 or R95 per metre for six-line fencing and R195 for 18-line fencing. This guide uses the detailed package rates of R105 and R205 respectively. Confirm any special or project-specific rate before booking.

Will the fence work during a power cut?

A compatible energiser with a charged backup battery can keep working during an outage. However, runtime depends on the equipment, battery condition and mode. The earlier 4–8-hour guide is not a guaranteed runtime. For longer outages, ask about suitable solar equipment.

Does an electric fence use a lot of electricity?

Check the chosen energiser’s rated power consumption. The energiser sends controlled pulses to the fence; fence wires are not connected directly to household mains electricity.

Comparisons with a 60W bulb or pulse voltages around 9,000V are general examples, rather than specifications for every model.

Is electric fencing a useful security measure?

It can add a deterrent and support perimeter monitoring. However, its performance depends on the design, equipment and maintenance. For this reason, consider it alongside alarms and CCTV.

Electric fencing is also used for suitable animal-control applications, with a design selected for that purpose.

How can I compare installation quotes fairly?

First compare the same length, line count and materials. Next check the energiser, accessories and site work. Finally, confirm VAT, certificate arrangements and warranty terms.
